In recent years,as we all know all too well, butchering animals has become a weird, macho art form in certain moneyed urban areas. Hello, nouveau artisanal Brooklyn! It’s so far beyond a clichĂ© that I’m getting bored just typing it.
But this piqued my interest: an email from the choreographer Carrie Ahern, wondering if the Performance Club might consider attending her new solo, Borrowed Prey, at Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, a butcher shop in Chelsea Market. The work, a chronicle of sorts, examines our relationship to our food, and stems in part from Ahern’s research hunting, butchering and slaughtering animals. Only 20 audience members are allowed in for each performance, which includes the butchering of a lamb (and, yes, inevitably, the meat is for sale post performance). Writing all of this makes me a little squirmy. The thought of filing into a butcher shop to watch a literal dance of death makes me more than  a little squirmier. So, well … I’m in. Anyone else?
Carrie is offering $18 tickets (the usual cost is $25) for up to 15 people for the 9 p.m. show on Friday, April 27th. Tickets can be purchased here; check your inboxes for the discount code, or please leave a comment below if you are not on our email list.
I’m not sure to what extent we’ll have appetites after this one. But we’ll definitely be going out for drinks.
